Spravato and Alcohol: What You Need to Know
One common question we hear at Next Step Psychiatry is about alcohol use during Spravato treatment. Here's what you need to know.
The Short Answer
Avoid alcohol on treatment days. You should not drink alcohol:
- 24 hours before your Spravato session
- On the day of treatment
- Until the next morning after treatment
Why Alcohol and Spravato Don't Mix
Enhanced Sedation Both Spravato and alcohol cause sedation. Combining them increases drowsiness significantly.
Blood Pressure Effects Alcohol can affect blood pressure, complicating monitoring during treatment.
Reduced Effectiveness Alcohol may interfere with Spravato's antidepressant effects.
Our Guidelines at Next Step Psychiatry
At Next Step Psychiatry, we advise:
- No alcohol 24 hours before treatment
- Stay hydrated with water instead
- Discuss any concerns with your provider
What About Social Drinking?
